In the early nineteen Seventies, an ambitious young lawyer from St. Vincent and the Grenadines completed his doctoral dissertation, then he return to the Eastern Caribbean with his PhD. in political science. Although obtaining a doctorate was a big thing, when this young PhD. this young Vincentian was given a teaching fellowship at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, it was even a bigger thing then.
This was major important thing in that era. Let me paint the picture for you. To attend a school for and of higher learning was something that was reserved for the brilliant-wealthy within the community. The people who fell into this category was very minute. I will venture to say this that many was wealthy but not brilliant enough to gain acceptance into such a school and in the same manner many were brilliant but were not wealthy enough to afford the thought of going to such a school. So to know someone who was employed at one of these school was a big thing.
The person of whom I speak is the current Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Ralph E. Gonsalves PhD. I conclude that the date was 1973 from a speech Mr. Gonsalves made in Grenada, when he spoke of his expulsion from Barbados by the Barbados Government.
In 1973, something went extremely chaotic for this overly ambitious young Lawyer, which sent his university teaching fellowship in trouble. One of his teaching colleagues, a young Female who also had a teaching fellowship with the same institution (The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus), reported that this young Vincentian PhD. Ralph Gonsalves had inappropriately and sexually imposed himself upon her.
What was the true nature of the allegations that was made against Gonsalves? I will say this whatever the nature of the sexual acts, five extremely major events came out of the report. One of those events happened some thirty (36) years later. (Please pay attention and you will be able to detect the five major events that followed). After this report was made a few strange things transpired that upon careful review have move me, to arrive to my conclusion.
A Trade Unionist from St. Vincent and the Grenadines by the name of Burns Bonadie, was on the Island of Barbados at the time of Ralph Gonsalves’ troubles. Upon Ralph E. Gonsalves request, Burns organized for a (decease captain, whom for reason unknown to me, Gonsalves grew too despised) vessel to secretly smuggle Ralph Gonsalves out of Barbados. It was at the dead of night, when the entire Barbados population was fast asleep that Burns and his accomplices; dressed Ralph Gonsalves in the garment of a woman, and not taking any chances, they also rapped him in sheets and carry him on board the vessel that left Barbados in the dead of night without proper Barbados sea port clearance.
By this time the Government of Barbados have already revoke the work permit (which make it impossible for Ralph to earn a living on that Island) and they also revoke his residence which making it illegal for the young PhD. to make it lawful for him to continue to live on that Island without first going to the immigration authority to be conditioned.
The whole idea behind the revocation of Gonsalves Barbados residence and workers permit was to ensure that he leave the island via a legal rout. The question that we all must answer is: Did the Government of Barbados wanted Gonsalves to leave the island or was there more to it. From Ralph Gonsalves’ behavior there were more to it than simply getting him off of the island. This is what occurred behind the scenes.

The Beginning of a rumor. A re-enactment of 1973
The rumor that was started to justify the young ambitious Lawyer/PhD: Ralph Gonsalves expulsion form Barbados took a lot of crafting. The PhD. chosen to associate with a class of people he will not normally associate with, his lie about why he was expelled from Barbados, was bought hook, line and sinker by his new found associates. The lie that the young lawyer told, made everyone involved looked bad and the only hero was Ralph Gonsalves himself.
Gonsalves made the alleged victim (the professor at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus) look like a whore, who were sleeping around with men with power; one who care nothing about the wife or the marriage of the men with whom she got involved. He also managed to paint the sitting Prime Minister of Barbados, look like an unfaithful, cheating and overly jealous man; who have been carrying on an extra marital affair with this young female (Gonsalves alleged Victim) professor, disregarding his respect for the marriage vow he made to his wife and to God. Ralph E. Gonsalves also painted the sitting Prime Minister to appear like an egotistic womanizer, who will not think twice to use his prime ministerial authority or to employ government’s resources in putting pressure on his opponent in a personal vendetta (two qualities and an outstanding practice that P.M. Gonsalves have become famous for).
It was Ralph Gonsalves’ story that the then sitting Prime Minister of Barbados, was having an extramarital affair with his alleged victim (The Professor at the UWI Cave Hill campus) and he (Ralph E. Gonsalves) being the Casanova (lover man) that he is, managed to win the sexual loyalty of this young female professor with whom the then sitting Prime Minister, was alleged to be having a sexual affair with. Ralph Gonsalves claimed, that his dethroning of the sitting Prime Minister, made the jealous PM extremely mad, and as a result, the Prime Minister, ordered that the relevant departments revoke the young ambitious Lawyer and PhD. Worker permit and his residence which they did.
The radical underclass with whom Ralph Gonsalves took social refuge, eat up his story like a starving fish being thrown an empty hook. They swallowed it up hook, line and sinker. To butt (win sexual favor from another man’s sex partner) the Prime Minister is almost never heard of. Now the “boys on the block” saw Ralph E. Gonsalves as the biggest wife-man (A wife-man is a prestigious title to hold among men of the black, poorer class within the West Indian community. It is a title that is given to any male who have a lot of woman. Or one whom a lot of women find attractive and was willing to sleep with that man) ever.
Note:
(The wife-man mentality is one of those quality that survived slavery. Where the big, strong back men were preserved as stud in the same way a breeder will use a horse, to preserve the blood line of an exceptional breed of horse. During slavery the studs were given special privileges and they get to sleep with most of the other female slaves without the responsibility of fathering the children he produced. This was how the owner of the plantations who owned the slaves planned it to maximize his profits).
Some of the question we must find answer to are:

Some of the question we must find answer to are:
- Was Ralph E. Gonsalves story about his sexual relationship with the UWI professor with whom he claimed to have had a relationship with true?
- Was the reason Ralph E. Gonsalves claimed as to why he was expelled from the island of Barbados where he made his living as a university professor true
- Was the report that this University professor made to the police alleging that she was raped by Ralph Gonsalves true?
- We will attempt to dig up evidence to answer the above questions?
The Plot to Nab a professional Rapist
After the commission of the offence Ralph E. Gonsalves is alleged to have committed, he suspected his professional colleague (professor at UWI Cave Hill) and victim was going to report the matter to the Barbados police. As a result of his confirmed suspicions, he (Ralph Gonsalves) went into hiding from the police. But why did the young lawyer and PhD. choose to go into hiding, if he did not commit an offense of some kind? He suspected and the rumors that reached to his ears, confirmed within his mind that a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Barbados police.
The revocation of Gonsalves' papers was a way of facilitating Gonsalves' arrest, because the authorities were unable to flush him out of the hole wherein he had so sheepishly took refuge. It was obvious that the young professor did not show up to work, where he may have been discreetly nab by the law.
The effort that was placed into apprehending Professor Ralph E. Gonsalves may have went down in the history of Barbados Law enforcement. Never before, had there been such a sting operation put in place, to apprehend a suspect that involved three separate government agencies (Police, Immigration and the Ministry of foreign affairs).
Note (The young lawyer and PhD. could not take the chance of being arrested after all, his career had just began. In that era, an arrest for any sexual allegation, would have made his doctorate useless. Added to that he may never have gotten the opportunity to be call to the bar. In Gonsalves’ head and in his future interest, it was highly important that he was not apprehended, charged, tried and found guilty for the crime he was alleged to have commit.
This would have meant the end of his professional career even before it began).
The Barbadian authorities were left with no alternative but to officially terminate the two lawful reasons, for him (Ralph E. Gonsalves) to remain on the island of Barbados; which was the revocation of his work permit and his residence. The Barbadian authority laid a well-planned trap, hoping that Mr. Gonsalves would take the opportunity to leave the island in the manner in which he so glamorously arrived.
Little that they knew, Gonsalves have been safe on the shores of the country of his birth. No heroic flight back to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, no mamma, papa, sister, brother and no friends at the airport to welcome him back, from his long trip aboard, which was the custom in that era. But a shameful disgraceful appearance at the house. I can imagine him pretending that he had planned a surprised trip back to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, just to surprise everyone. With the truth well hidden away, Ralph’s secret was safe. At lease that was what he thought.
But the word began to circulate that the young ambitious PhD. had his rights to live and work in Barbados revoke, he had to come up with an excuse. Meanwhile the University of the West Indies was trying it very best to ensure that this development did not get out and cause a scandal. The allegation of a professor initiated an on campus rape of a member of faculty. A scandal of this nature, could have destroyed the credibility the institution was in the process of building.
Ralph E. Gonsalves had to come up with any explanation, for his friends, associates and colleagues. Not Just any explanation; his explanation had to be extremely good if it was going to cut it. He had to come up with a master stroke (a big, dirty lie), if he was going to have an ounce of credibility remaining when it is all done. The police was very discreet about causing a scandal to protect the virtues of the “Professor” who was the victim. After all she have to stand before the class and instruct hundreds of higher education seekers. There was also the government of Barbados who wanted to protect the reputation of the institution (the UWI Cave Hill campus). For Barbados, education tourism was and still is a big thing. in this era, rape was total taboo and such a public scandal even for a victim, could have end the career of this brilliant woman.
